More than seven thousand enthusiastic runners of all ages and from all walks of life participated in Territorial Army Half Marathon run on October 2, 2018 organised by the Territorial Army in association with Athletic Federation of India.
Territorial Army has a rich history having achieved many glorious feats in the past wars of 1962, 1965 and 1971. The Territorial Army have displayed outstanding grit and courage in operations PAWAN, operation VIJAY, operation PARAKRAM and in combating terrorism in both J&K and North East garnering numerous awards including one Kriti Chakra, six Atti Vishist Seva Medal, one Yudh Seva Medal, five Veer Chakra, five Shaurya Chakra, one Bar to Sena Medal, 75 Sena Medal, 28 Vishist Seva Medal, 17 Mention in Dispatches and 277 Chief of Army Staff Commendation cards. October 9 every year is celebrated as the Territorial Army day and as part of this momentous occasion, a half marathon run is organised every year in New Delhi since 2017.
This year the half marathon run was organised by the Territorial Army in association with Athletic Federation of India to promote a healthy life style amongst the citizens' of the country as part of 'Swasth Bharat Campaign' on the Birth Anniversary of the 'Father of the Nation'. The Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen D Anbu, alongwith Director General Military Operations, Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, graced the occasion.
The presence of Lt Col (Hony) Kapil Dev, legendary cricketer and Maj D P Singh (Retired), Kargil veteran and India's first blade runner were highly motivational for the enthusiastic runners who had turned up in huge numbers.
The highlight of the event was voluntary participation of more than seven thousand enthusiastic runners from all walks of life including foreign diplomats and elite runners from different parts of the country. The event consisted of 21 kms, 10 kms and 5 kms run categories, culminating with distribution of medallion and certificates to all who participated and completed the run as a token of appreciation. Trophies were also awarded to exceptional runners in selected categories. The huge positive response and appreciation from all participants was very encouraging. Territorial Army is a citizens Army in which Indian citizens from all walks of life can join, subject to terms and conditions, and are called upon to serve the Nation in times of need.
