Lt Gen Abhay Krishna GOC-in-C Eastern Command, awarded gallantry medals to Army personnel at an impressive and solemn Investiture Ceremony conducted at Albert Eka Auditorium in Fort William Kolkata on February 24, 2018.
Eight Sena Medals (Gallantry) were awarded. Out of these, two jawans made the supreme sacrifice during operations and were given the award posthumously. The prestigious Sena Medal (Gallantry) Awards awarded to Rifleman Rabin Sharma of 4/1 GR was received by his wife Smt Sabita Tiwari Sharma and for Rifleman Khampai Wangsu of 13 Assam Rifle by his wife Smt Sesa Wangsu
The tradition of selfless sacrifice for the Nation was conspicuous in the gallant acts of all awardees on this occasion. Prominent among them stand Rfn Khampai Wangsu of 13 Battalion Assam Rifle, who was part of an Army column carrying out operations near a village in Arunachal Pradesh. As the lead scout, Rfn Khampai Wangsu noticed a suspicious movement which turned out to be a group of insurgents who opened fire on the Army Column. Rfn Khampai Wangsu was grievously injured. However, disregarding the danger to his life, the brave soldier stood his ground and instantly retaliated with fire. Unmindful of his own injury, he displayed conspicuous bravery of the highest order, neutralizing the insurgent group, while saving the lives of other team members. The brave soldier breathed his last when he was being evacuated.
On the occasion, 15 units were also awarded GOC-in-C Eastern Command Unit Citations for distinguished service. Of the eight gallantry awards, two soldiers of Assam Rifles were awarded gallantry awards for their invaluable contribution to internal security in the North East.
Lt Gen Abhay Krishna, later interacted with the award winners and their families and acknowledged their invaluable contribution towards upholding the highest standards of professionalism in the Indian Army.
