The Raksha Rajya Mantri Dr Subhash Ramrao Bhamre inaugurated the 578 metre-long Theng Tunnel in Sikkim, on June 7, 2018.
On arriving at Bagdogra Airport, the RRM was received by Lt Gen PM Bali, GOC Trishakti Corps who accompanied him to Chungthang in North Sikkim for inauguration of the tunnel.
The 578 meter-long double lane tunnel is the longest tunnel in Sikkim and has been constructed on Gangtok – Chungthang State Highway by the Border Roads Organisation. The tunnel bypasses a treacherous stretch of road between Sikkim's capital Gangtok and Chungthang, which is frequently prone to closure due to land slides and shooting stones and will provide all weather connectivity. Besides shortening the distance, the tunnel will improve operational mobility as well as provide great relief to tourists and citizens travelling to North Sikkim.
Later, the Minister called on the Governor of Sikkim, Shri Shriniwas Patil in Gangtok and interacted with him. Subsequently he visited Sukhna Cantonment where he was briefed by GOC Trishakti Corps on the operational situation. During his visit, Dr Bhamre interacted with personnel of Army, Border Road Organisation and complimented their indomitable spirit and dedication to the nation.
