Indian Battalion leads UNMISS Peacekeeping Contingent at Malakal (South Sudan)
Commemoration Ceremony and Sports Day was organized at Malakal Sports Stadium on May 29, 2018 to celebrate "International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers". The day offers the chance to pay tribute to the uniformed and civilian personnel's valuable contribution.
The ceremony started with contingent marching parade with absolute precision. Total five peacekeeping contingents including Indian Battalion, UK Engineers, Bangladesh Marine Force Unit, Rwanda Battalion and UN Police participated in the Parade. Capt DS Bhandari of Indian Battalion led the contingent marching parade. James Tor Monybuny, Governor of Central Upper Nile State was the Chief Guest of the event who took the salute of marching contingents. Deputy Governor of state, Mayor of Malakal City, Acting Head of Field Office, Sector (North) Commander also witnessed the mesmerizing parade.
After the parade, sports event was conducted which included basketball, volleyball and tug of piece. Indian Battalion won the basketball championship by beating Malakal team while Malakal team lifted the volleyball championship by defeating UK Engineers. Tug of Piece was contested between women of UNMISS and Malakal and the event was won by women of Malakal.
The ceremony concluded with prize distribution to the winners by the Chief Guest. While addressing the crowd, the Chief Guest complimented the contingents on their immaculate marching and turnout. He also valued the efforts of UNMISS towards establishing sustainable peace and development in South Sudan.
