Prahar – Samaj Jagruti Sanstha is an NGO established by Col Sunil W Deshpande, VSM (Veteran), Ex-Commanding Officer- 2 Maratha LI (Kali Panchwin) on January 9th, 1994 with the sole aim of spreading soldierly qualities in the society namely discipline, courage, vigilance, moral values and patriotism. Approximately 40,000 children have done various outdoor camps of Prahar & 279 young boys and girls motivated and guided by Prahar are officers in the Armed Forces today.
Since last 4 years a new venture has been pioneered by Prahar of honouring the valiant recipient of the highest peace time gallantry award winner i.e. Ashok Chakra by presenting a cheque of Rs. 51,000/- to awardee or to next of kin. The aim of organising this function is to arouse patriotic fervor amongst the citizens of Nagpur & area around and to motivate the youth to join the forces.
This year Prahar honoured Veerpatni Smt Sushma Nirala wife of Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala AC (Posthumous), Garud Commando, Indian Air Force on March 23, 2018. A grand felicitation programme was organized in Nagpur. Air Marshal Suneel S Soman PVSM AVSM VM (Veteran) graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Dr. Kumar Shastri famous orator of Nagpur presided over the function. The programme was attended by many ex-servicemen from Nagpur as well as Indian Air Force personnel.
The youth of Nagpur was also present in large numbers. In her speech, Smt Sushma Nirala expressed the desire to fulfill her husband's dream of sending her daughter Jigyasa to the Indian Air Force. She also thanked Prahar for honouring her. Col Sunil Deshpande VSM (Veteran) presented Prahar memento to Corporal Jyoti Praksh Nirala's unit 617 Garud Flight.
Air Marshal Soman, in his address told in detailed about the working of the Garud Commandos and also explained their role in J&K. Smt Sushma Nirala was given a memento of Prahar by Air Marshal Suneel Soman PVSM AVSM VM (Veteran) and Col Sunil Deshpande VSM (Veteran) presented a cheque of Rs. 51,000/- to her.
