The Government of India recently granted the rank of Honorary Colonel to Prof (Dr) Suranjan Das, Vice Chancellor, Jadavpur University Kolkata and Prof (Dr) Sankar Kumar Ghosh, Vice Chancellor, Kalyani University WB, as 'Colonel Commandant' in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) for the duration of their office. A befitting ceremony was held at Fort William for conferring the ranks to the two Vice Chancellors. Lt Gen PP Malhotra, Director General of NCC was the Chief Guest for the event while Dr Partha Chatterjee, Education Minister in the Government of West Bengal was invited as the Guest of Honour. The two guests pinned the accoutrements onto the uniforms of both the Vice Chancellors.
Maj Gen KT Sreekumar, ADG, West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate, NCC, Brig SPS Parhar, DDG alongwith Officers, Associate NCC Officers and cadets along with many civilian guests were present to witness the ceremony.
The honorary rank of Colonel has been conferred with a view to honour the Vice Chancellors for having taken sincere interest in the cause of improving the quality of youth by providing all around education through NCC activities. Conferring the rank of Colonel Commandant aims at increased patronage and purposeful association for the furtherance of NCC activities. It also enhances interaction of Vice Chancellors with cadets and officers to help and guide them through their educational and NCC career.
