Adjunct to the Hyderabad Sailing Week held annually in the twin cities, a Green Brigade walk with an awareness theme of 'Fit Hyderabad Swachh Hyderabad' and a massive human chain formation under 'Save Lake Campaign' were organized by Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), Secunderabad on July 1, 2018. The events were held in the foreground of the picturesque Hussain Sagar Lake with the active participation of students from Army Public Schools, NCC cadets, Army personnel, youth and general public. About 6000 students and youth formed a human chain all around Hussain Sagar Lake. The 3.5 kilometer Green Brigade walk was flagged off by former Indian Cricket Captain Mohammad Azharuddin and Mrs Seema Singh, Chairperson, Family Welfare Organisation, MCEME encompassing a pulsating walk along the Hussain Sagar Lake covering the route circuit from the EME Sailing Club to Sanjeevaiah Park to promote fitness & health awareness amongst the citizens of the twin-cities. In sync with the citizen driven Swachh Bharat Campaign, the children voluntarily undertook the cleanliness drive promoting ecological awareness, thus, generating active and enthusiastic participation from the on-lookers for a 'Swachh Hyderabad' campaign.
The twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad witnessed the most competitive, prestigious, colourful and glamorous event known as 'Hyderabad Sailing Week' with the beautiful sight of colourful sails in the backdrop of Hussain Sagar from July 3, 2018. The Multiclass National Level Sailing Championship at the Hussain Sagar Lake, Hyderabad, is now in its 33rd year. The event, over the years, has became big attraction for locals and tourist alike.Shri KT Rama Rao, Minister for IT & Municipal Administration and Urban Development, Telangana State was the Chief Guest for the opening ceremony. National Sailing Coaching Camp was conducted from June 17-30, 2018 as a precursor to the main event. The Hyderabad Sailing Week also included National level Seminar on 'Race Management'.
Major General TSA Narayanan, Vice Commodore, EME Sailing Association said "Hyderabad is a popular destination for the sailing in the country. The wind conditions in June – July are most favorable in the Hussain Sagar Lake to hone the skills in boat handling and understanding wind shifts. This is a landmark year for the EME Sailing Association as this year the event has been accredited as the Yachting Association of India(YAI) National Ranking event where in the performance of the sailors will be ranked, which will give them points for selection into National Team. The ecofriendly sports are getting popular day by day and over two hundred sailors from all over the country are expected to participate in this year's event".
Major Alok Kumar, Honorary Secretary, EME Sailing Association informed that the event will see the biggest congregation of sailors in the country. This year being the Senior Multiclass ranking regatta under YAI and also Laser ranking championship under Laser Class Association of India (LCAI), will see participation in Laser Standard, Laser Radial, Laser 4.7 rigs and 470 class, RS:X, FX, Finn Class and 49er classes of boats. Series of events are being planned for making Hyderabad Sailing Week-2018 a huge festival of sails for the twin cities. Sailing is an ecofriendly sport which requires immense technical skills to negotiate wind conditions and water. The concepts of sails and boat handling have undergone huge advancement, however the sport still retains the old world charm of explorers and discoverers who used their wind propelled boats to discover the world.
