As part of World Environment Day 2018 with the theme of 'Beat Plastic Pollution' Coast Guard District Headquarters (WB), Haldia conducted an event on June 5, 2018 in coordination with Indian Oil Corporation and Haldia Municipality. A walkathon was conducted with children and families carrying banners depicting actions for the protection of our environment and encouraging awareness followed by pledge taking ceremony.
A musical drama by wards and personnel of Coast Guard was displayed addressing the harmful effects of plastic pollution and actions to minimise the use of single use plastic products. Tree plantation at Haldia riverfront was also carried out by the ladies of Coast Guard faternity to help reduce ozone gases from the environment.
Deputy Inspector General M A Warsi, Commander West Bengal addressed the gathering to come together to combat one of the greatest environmental challenges of our times. Every year enough plastic is thrown to circle the earth four times. The Commander pointed out how plastic pollution has become an epidemic and raised the slogan 'If you can't reuse it, refuse it'.
The Indian Coast Guard is regularly conducting events as part of social awareness drive to sensitise the local populace about the ill effects of marine pollution.
