The Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman visited the Naval Units, INS Parundu and INS Kattabomman in South Tamil Nadu on January 31, 2018.
INS Parundu Naval Air Station is located near Uchipuli in Ramanathapuram District. On her visit to INS Parundu the Raksha Mantri was received by Vice Admiral Karmbir Singh Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command and Captain Kuldeep H Tankasle, Commanding Officer, INS Parundu. The Minister was briefed on the activities of INS Parundu and interacted with Officer and Sailors of INS Parundu.
Later the Raksha Mantri accompanied by Vice Admiral Karambir Singh visited INS Kattabomman in Tirunelveli district and was briefed on the activities of the unit by Capt Vishal Gupta, the Commanding Officer. Smt Nirmala Sitharaman here too interacted with officers and sailors during the walk around the station.
Naval Air Station Ramnad which was established as a Forward Operating Base, was commissioned as INS Parundu on March 26, 2009. INS Parundu operates a variety of aircraft including Helicopters, Medium Range and Remotely Piloted aircraft for surveillance along South Tamil Nadu Coast. INS Kattabomman commissioned on October 20, 1990 forms a vital link in communication chain of the Indian Navy and also provides logistic and administrative support for ships and submarines visiting Tuticorin Port.
