As the nation geared up for the Republic Day celebrations with a plethora of events being planned as a prelude, the Trishul Gunners Ice Hockey Championship was conducted on January 24, 2018 in the remote village of Yerath in Eastern Ladakh, with an aim to promote the sport in furtherance of the Indian Army's objective of reaching out to the people on the Northern Borders.
The harsh climatic conditions could not subdue the spirit of the event which was a huge success.
The preparation involved multifold aspects beginning with the fixing of the rink arena, procurement of the kit, organising the teams etc., Col Arunashish Sanyal and his team of 330 Fd Regt could foster the spirit of oneness among the locals by extending all out efforts for the successful conduct of the Championship.
The final event took place on 24th of January at Yerath with the inauguration by the youngest girl child of the village. The match between Chilam & Yerath kicked off and the Ice-rink was set on fire. The swift exchange of the puck with rapid movement on skates enthralled all spectators. The skillful encounter ended with team Yerath emerging the champions. It was followed by the prize distribution ceremony by the Chief Guest Brig Prabhjot Singh Bhatti, Cdr, 3 Arty Bde whose unparalleled vision and passion for sports led the 'Trishul Gunners' towards a professional conduct of the event. During interaction the Chief Guest felicitated the players and village elders, emphasized on the opportunities available for them pan India and the role of Indian Army in nation building. A community meal was also organized for all.
The event was another significant step by the Trishul Gunners in pursuit of the Indian Army's relentless outreach towards the population of border area in pursuit of National Unity. Together Trishul Gunners claim, "It's not about winning the match, but also winning hearts that matters in the end".
