Raksha Mantri Smt Nirmala Sitharaman along with Railway Minister Mr Piyush Goyal, Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr Devendra Fadnavis, and senior officials of Indian Army inspected the Elphinstone Road Railway station in Mumbai on October 31, 2017.
The Defence Minister announced that the Indian Army will construct three foot over-bridges at Railway Stations in Mumbai. One foot over-bridge will be constructed at Elphinstone Road Railway station where a stampede had taken the lives of 23 people on September 29, 2017. The two other foot over-bridge will be constructed at Currey Road and Ambivali (beyond Kalyan) stations.
It is the first occasion that the construction responsibility of foot over-bridge at a railway station has been given to Indian Army. Raksha Mantri said that the construction of foot over-bridge at Elphinstone Road station has been considered as an emergency. The new bridge will be constructed by the military's engineering wing, and will be ready for use by end of February 2018.
