Army Green Wins Durand Football Tournament 2016
Durand Cup is a prestigious football tournament which was instituted in 1888 at Shimla by Sir Henry Mortimer Durand. It is the oldest tournament in Asia and third oldest in the world after Football Association Cup of England and Scotland Football Association Cup. The Defence Services have been associated in organising Durand Football Tournament right from its inception. Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha, Chief of Air Staff & Chairman Chief of Staff Committee is the President of the Durand Football Tournament Society.
128th Edition of Durand Football Tournament was played from August 28, to September 11, 2016. Eight teams from Indian League of All India Football Federation and four Services teams participated in the current edition. A total of 33 matches were played at Ambedkar Stadium and Harbaksh Stadium.
The Football Tournament ended with an action packed Final match between Army Green and Naroca Football Club which went to the wire with the match going into penalty shootout, where Army Green Team prevailed with a 6-5 victory. The match was keenly contested with both teams fighting it out till the last minute and there were numerous exciting moments which kept the crowd on the edge of their seats.
The Chief Guest for the Ceremony was Air Chief Marshal Anup Raha, the Chief of the Air Staff & Chairman Chief of Staff Committee. The Chief Guest and Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of Naval Staff gave away the prizes to the Winners & Runners Up. ACM Anup Raha appreciated the sportsman spirit and the enthusiasm shown by the participation teams. Lt Gen Bipin Rawat, Vice Chief of the Army Staff was also present on the occasion.
Cash prizes of Rs 45 lac and Rs 20 lac was granted to the winners and runners up teams respectively and the teams reaching the semi-finals also received a cash prize of Rs 5 lac each. The tournament is unique wherein winning team takes away three trophies. Army Green were the proud recipients of "Durand Cup'' and "Shimla Trophy" which are rolling trophies while the "President Cup" was given permanently.
The 15 day football competition was played in a competitive and healthy spirit. It was a delightful feast of great foot balling skills enjoyed by the spectators.
