Lt Gen Surinder Singh assumed command of Western Command. During a solemn wreath laying ceremony Gen Surinder laid a wreath and paid homage to the Martyrs of Western Command. Thereafter the western army Commander reviewed a Guard of Honour. He also met the Senior Staff of the Headquarters and took stock of the operational situation.
Lt Gen Surinder Singh, GOC-in-C, Western Command was commissioned in 1979 into the Second Battalion, The Brigade of the Guards, an elite Infantry Regiment. In his illustrious career, the General has held prestigious command, staff and instructional posts. He is a graduate of the British Army Command Staff College, Army War College and the National Defence College. He rose in the ranks to command his Battalion and thereafter an Armored Brigade, an Infantry Division and a Mountain Corps.
Lt Gen DR Soni took over as the 19th General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC).
The General was commissioned in the Central India Horse in June 1979. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Pune and the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, he has, in his illustrious career, tenated important command, staff and instructional appointments. The General Officer commanded an Armoured Brigade, an Armoured Division and the Bhatinda Corps. He has attended the Defence College of Management and Technology at Shrivenham, UK and has the distinction of holding a Masters degree in Global Security from Cranfield University, UK.
The Army Commander is married to Colonel (Mrs) Suman Soni who is a Gynecologist and served in the Army for 22 years. She has been closely associated with welfare activities and has now assumed the responsibility of the Regional President, Army Wives Welfare Association of the Army Training Command (ARTRAC).
