The Army Institute of Fashion and Design (AIFD), Bangalore, in association with National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and World Skills India conducted the final selection for India Skills Competition in the skill of Visual Merchandising on October 27-28, 2016. The brand Central has associated itself with the competition as an Industry partner, supplying all the trendy garments and accessories used as display by the participants in the competition.
The main objective of this two-day test was to select the right candidate to represent the country in Visual Merchandising at World Skill Competition to be held at Abu Dhabi between October 14 -19, 2017.
Competitors who represent the best of their peers are selected through skill competitions in World Skills Member countries and regions. It is mandatory for them to be under the age of 22 years and be either students or professionals from the same field.
In the past AIFD has also hosted regional selections for the skill of Fashion Designing. An AIFD alumni represented the country in Leipzig, Germany in 2013 in Fashion Designing and Sao Paulo in 2015 in Visual Merchandising. This is one of the swiftest rising careers, with Merchandisers creating window and interior displays in shops and department stores, marketing the latest trends while maximizing sales.
Ten participants were shortlisted from students all over the country. Students from NIFT Mumbai, Pearl Academy, New Delhi, SASMIRA, Mumbai, Vogue and AIFD, Bangalore participated.
The eminent Jury members included VM expert and entrepreneur Ms Meera Jayaraman, Mr Deepansh Bhargava from Central, Mr Piyush from Central, Ms Wasvika Saini from R Jio.
Results of the competiton:
Winner: Mr Vivek Venugopal, Army Institute of Fashion and Design, Bangalore, received the cash award of Rs 50,000/- and will represent India in the Euro Skill competition from December 1-4, 2016.
The First Runner up: Ms Aesha Paramar, Synthetic and Arts Silk Mills Research Association, Mumbai, received a cash award of Rs 25,000/
The Second Runner up: Mr Nitish Kumar, Army Institute of Fashion and Design, Bangalore, received the cash award of Rs 10,000/-.
All these candidates will undergo training for 10 months in industry and under experts. One more round of selection will be carried out in June/July 2017 and the winner will represent India in the World Skill Competition to be held at Abu Dhabi during October 2017.
